Basic Chocolate Cake Donut/Doughnut Recipe

I use the following recipe with a variety of toppings.  With this recipe, you can make any chocolate donut combination (chocolate pretzel, cookie dough, s’mores, or anything else you want).  Let me know in the comments if you try any new recipes with this chocolate donut as the base! Enjoy!

 

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 cup of flour (I prefer whole wheat)
  • 1/4 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp of baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 cup of buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp of butter
  • 1 tsp of vanilla

Directions:

Donut

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease donut pan
  2. In a large bowl, mix together:
    • 1 cup of flour (I prefer whole wheat)
    • 1/4 cup of cocoa powder
    • 1/2 tsp of baking soda
    • 1/8 tsp of salt
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together:
    • 1/2 cup of buttermilk
    • 1/2 cup of sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 tbsp of butter
    • 1 tsp of vanilla
  4. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until just combined.  Don’t overmix!
  5. Fill donut pan (see here for tip on best way to do this!)
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until donuts bounce back when touched
