We all have had that experience where we get halfway through a recipe (for me its usually a donut recipe), and realize that we misread buttermilk and thought it said milk, or just didn’t realize buttermilk was in the recipe at all. Normally, when I miss an ingredient, I run up to the convenient store 800 ft from my house and get what I need. However, with buttermilk, that is usually impossible. Therefore, if you’re in a pinch and need to make a sub for buttermilk, follow these steps below!
For each 1 cup of buttermilk that you need to substitute, you can:
- use 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, plus 1 cup of milk
- stir and let stand for 5 minutes
Don’t have lemon juice? No problemo. You can substitute the lemon juice for white vinegar in the steps above.
Don’t have white vinegar either? Then maybe you should make something different. Kidding! You can also try these ideas
- For 1 cup of buttermilk substitute, use 1 cup of plain yogurt
- For 1 cup of buttermilk subsitute, use 1+3/4 tsp cream of tartar plus 1 cup of milk.
